Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Moves into Latin America
The IPJ was founded by philanthropist Joan B. Kroc to foster peace, cultivate justice and create a safer world. Evidence of the institute’s work can be witnessed in the eight years of work and successes seen in Nepal. Now, the IPJ is taking a closer look at extending its reach into Latin America. Luncheon concludes University of the Third Age’s 30th anniversary celebration The 30th anniversary of the University of the Third Age, USD’s twice-a-year continuing education program for people age 55 and up, closed with a luncheon Thursday, July 31, in the Degheri Alumni Center courtyard. USD mourns loss of philanthropist Sid Craig Sidney “Sid” Craig, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, passed away July 21 in San Diego after a long illness. He was 76. Best known for co-founding Jenny Craig Inc., one of the world’s most successful weight-loss companies with his wife Jenny, the Craigs distinguished themselves by their generosity at the University of San Diego. In 1996, Sid Craig gave USD a major gift to build the Jenny Craig Pavilion to honor his wife. USD Nominated as One of San Diego’s Best Workplaces A sizable part of Gregory Pogue’s office in Maher Hall 115 is taken up by a table that serves as a place to meet, brainstorm and produce solutions. In the middle, under a plate of glass, is a copy of his department’s mission statement: “Human Resources will not settle for mediocrity. We are continually moving toward greatness.” Fans Get a Kick out of U.S.-Brazil Women’s Soccer Game A record breaking crowd of 7,502 fans jammed their way into the Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium to watch an exhibition match between the United States women’s soccer team and Brazil. On a late second-half goal the U.S. won the match 1-0, the final tune-up before next month’s Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Festival Brings Beautiful Music to USD Tori Lund graduated from the University of San Diego in May, but she returned to campus this week to participate in the third annual USD Chamber Music Festival and is glad she did. ELDA Summer Institute Puts Focus on Community To Boost School Learning More than 60 area school administrators and teachers now have the tools to implement a sense of community into their learning processes. Participants of the recent School of Leadership and Education Sciences’ Educational Leadership Development Academy (ELDA) Summer Institute focused on leadership as collaboration among administrators, teachers and students. Learning Never Gets Old at the University of the Third Age It’s never too late to learn and it’s certainly never too late to have some fun while doing it. At the University of the Third Age, an informative and innovative program for people age 55 and over, the joys and excitement of learning take center stage in the three-week session beginning July 14 at the University of San Diego. 2008 Staff Employee of the Year to Retire She was about to be recognized at the June 6 University of San Diego employee picnic, but the always reliable Maria Luis do Carmo, for probably the first time in her 21 years at USD, was nowhere to be found. That’s exactly what a few dozen of them experienced Monday during the University of San Diego (USD) Autism Institute’s Summer Autism Conference. Four USD Baseball players selected in MLB Draft Junior left-hander Brian Matusz of the University of San Diego baseball team was drafted No 4 overall in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Matusz is now the highest USD player ever drafted in the current format of the MLB Draft. He was the first pitcher taken in the draft on Thursday, June 5. USD Hosts Summit on Peace & Prosperity Through Trade A summit on May 30 hosted by the University of San Diego Ahlers Center for International Business and the San Diego World Trade Center brought together leaders from business, government and other organizations to learn about how markets can foster world peace and well-being and provided an opportunity to share best practices for creating socially responsible and economically profitable business ventures. IPJ Recognized for Years of Peace Work in Nepal For the past eight years, members of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ) have made frequent trips to Nepal and quietly been a part of the development process of that country. Their work was recently recognized with a presentation of the Everest Summit Award by the top Nepal government leader, Maoist Chairman Prachanda, in Kathmandu on May 25.
