Join us on September 20 to welcome the latest speaker in the Human Side of Science speaker series: Dr. Lisa V. Poulikakos.

Dr. Poulikakos is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego and founder of the Poulikakos Lab, which furthers the science and engineering of nanophotonic materials. Nanophotonics, the study and manipulation of light at the nanoscale, holds great potential to address a range of societally relevant challenges from sustainable energy technology, to information security, and global health.

Tests for serious disease can be slow, expensive, or imprecise. In many ways, current medical diagnostic technologies lag behind what engineering can provide. Too often, imprecise or slow diagnostic tools mean that patients don’t always get the most targeted treatments. In this talk, Dr. Poulikakos shares her effort to develop new diagnostic tools that use nanostructured surfaces, allowing them produce results more quickly, more accurately and at lower cost.

The talk will take place in SCST 232. Lunch will be provided and USD students will earn Connect or Compass points for attending!

To learn more about Dr. Poulikakos and her research, please watch her 2019 L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowship Video.
