Gather online and join on Thursday, February 17th as we hear from alumnus Albert Samaha, Inequality Editor at BuzzFeed News and author of Concepcion: An Immigrant Family’s Fortunes. We'll discuss his USD experience, Filipino
and Lebanese identity, and how it’s influenced his work in the field of journalism.
More on Albert:
Albert Samaha is the son of a Filipino mother and a Lebanese father. He was born in Vallejo, CA and lived briefly in the Philippines before growing up in Sacramento, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of San Diego. Albert is an investigative journalist, Inequality Editor at BuzzFeed News, and author of two books. For his latest book, Concepcion: An Immigrant Family’s Fortunes, he was awarded a Whiting Foundation Creative Nonfiction Grant. His first book, Never Ran, Never Will: Boyhood and Football in a Changing American Inner City, was winner of the New York Society Library’s 2019 Hornblower Award, a finalist for the 2019 PEN/ESPN Literary Sports Writing Award, and adapted into the Netflix docuseries We Are: The Brooklyn Saints. His reporting has freed an innocent person from prison, changed police misconduct laws in six states, and led more than a dozen companies to implement additional safety protocols for workers during the pandemic. He lives in New York City.
Whether you are involved in FUSO, work in journalism, or are a student who wants to learn from a USD alum who is a professional in their field of interest, this event is for you!
