Welcome from the Provost

James Antony, PhD

Provost Antony joins the University of San Diego following his tenure as Provost and Executive Vice President at George Mason University, Virginia’s largest and most diverse research university. At George Mason he also served as Professor in both the Costello College of Business and the College of Education and Human Development.

Prior to his appointment at George Mason, Jim was Dean of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of California, San Diego, where he was also Professor of Education Studies along with a courtesy appointment in the Rady School of Management.

Jim previously spent nearly a decade in New England as a faculty member at Harvard University, where he led the higher education graduate program and co-directed Harvard's Management Development Program. Before Harvard, he served as an Associate Provost at Yale University and held a courtesy faculty title in the Yale School of Management.

Jim began his academic career at the University of Washington, where he served for 17 years as Professor of Education with a secondary appointment in Sociology. During his tenure at Washington he held several leadership roles, including Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Associate Dean for the College of Education, and was the director of two academic programs.

As a scholar, Jim's research focuses on the development of higher education faculty, the socialization and leadership preparation of future college leaders, and data-informed decision-making in higher education. He has taught courses in leadership theory and ethics, higher education finance and budgeting, data-based decision-making, and introductory and advanced statistical analysis.

A native Californian, Jim was born in Los Angeles and raised in Thousand Oaks. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology, and his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Change, from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs provides academic leadership to the university's college and schools and promotes excellence in all of the university's academic programs and initiatives.
