Flipped learning achieves deep student learning, increased student engagement and improved student satisfaction. But it also takes a lot of time and preparation. Traditional flipped learning requires instructors to create videos and redesign their courses. In this session, I share best practices for flipped learning and introduce what I call the “hybrid flip”. By adding a few key assignments and repurposing how and when lecture-based instruction is used, instructors can reap the benefits of flipped learning by investing a fraction of the time and preparation. Participants will leave this session understanding the essential elements of flipped learning and with the tools needed to adopt a hybrid flipped approach for their courses. These include ‘RSQ’ assignments and tailoring existing lecture slide decks to address formatively assessed student confusion in real time.
Intended Audience: All faculty and graduate students.
Speaker Bio: Thomas Mennella, PhD (he/him), Associate Professor of Biology at Western New England University. An instructor and professor in higher education for over fifteen years, Tom was an early-adopter of the flipped classroom format and is intimately involved in active learning and innovating in the classroom. Tom has given training on the flipped classroom format to faculty across the US and internationally and has presented the flipped classroom approach at regional and national conferences. Very recently, Tom has turned his attention to ChatGPT and related AI platforms and is exploring their impact on, and integration with, the college classroom experience for students and instructors.
