In profound and problematic ways, the life, death and afterlife of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have served as materials for constructing a ghostly ideal of charismatic sociopolitical leadership – so much so that five decades after his assassination, many still ask who or where is the next King? Utilizing Jacques Derrida’s concept of hauntology, Brooks makes the case that the genealogy of Black religious leadership in sociopolitical life, particularly from the modern civil rights era to the present, has been haunted, so to speak, by a nostalgic mythology of Black male clerical authority.
