Each year, the Department of Physics and Biophysics collaborates with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry to host the annual Soft Matter Symposium, an event that features distinguished speakers from colleges and universities around the country. This year, the symposium is entitled "Frontiers in Soft Matter and Macromolecular Networks," and will take place on campus at the University of San Diego in the Mother Rosalie Hill Hall on September 16.

The two keynote speakers of the symposium are Professor Timothy Atherton of Tufts University and Professor Amelia Fuller of Santa Clara University. Professor Atherton will give the morning presentation entitled "Shapeshifting and Shape Sculpting in Soft Matter", and will be followed by additional invited faculty highlight talks given by Professor Gregory Holland of San Diego State University, Professor Janet Sheung of Claremont McKenna College, Professor Bekele Gurmessa of Bucknell University, Professor Elena Grintsevich of Cal State Long Beach, and Professor Seunghyun Sim of UC Irvine.

Professor Fuller will give the afternoon presentation entitled "Relating Structure with Molecular Recognition Function in Peptoids", and will be followed by faculty talks given by Professor Pasha Tabatabai of Seattle University, Professor Deepali Bhandari of Cal State Long Beach, Professor Parag Katira of San Diego State University, Professor Evelyn Tang of Rice University, and Professor Alex Frano of UC San Diego.
