Abstract
In California, Latino men make up 38% of the state population but account for 41% of the prison population (Sakala, 2014). Society's expectation, that individuals will seamlessly matriculate back into their communities, is unrealistic in the absence of humanizing opportunities for personal growth and meaningful learning during their imprisonment. One response to this need is Arts In Corrections (AIC) which offers arts programming in California state prisons. This arts-based qualitative study will highlight the experiences of formerly incarcerated Latino men who participated in an AIC playwriting class during their time in a California state prison. Drawing from ethnodrama (Saldaña, 2005), testimonio (Latina Feminist Group, 2001), and Chicana Feminist epistemologies (Anzaldúa, 2015; Delgado Bernal, 1998) this study situates a nepantlera methodology; one that seeks to transform the testimonios of these men into ethnoteatro. Ethnoteatro is conceptualized in this study as theatre and playwriting research that aims to amplify the voices of the pervasively discarded, dehumanized, and disappeared. The playwright researcher (also an AIC teaching artist who worked with the men during their incarceration) will serve as an embodied listener (Anzaldúa, 2015; Valenzuela, 2017) and faithful witness (Cruz, 2017) to their testimonios, as they speak free from the restrictions of prison walls about their experiences. By situating a nepantlera framework--one that privileges justice-involved participants as cuentistas (storytellers)--this study will deeply examine the relationships within a creative justice-impacted community, while also interrogating corrective and criminalizing narratives of mass incarceration, through art as healing. As such, this study broadly aims to challenge the dominant discourse on Latino men in prison to dignify their knowledge and lived experiences.

Older adults possess numerous strengths that make counseling as effective in later life as it is earlier in the life span. However, societal ageism and narrow depictions of wellness that focus only on physical health interfere with the pursuit of mental health and wellness as people age. Her videos, paintings, and drawings consider the raw, convulsive beauty of this place while drawing attention to the perils of accompanying glacial melt. As the artist herself has noted, “The experience of observing nature over an extended period of time in this subpolar region of the earth reveals the troubling presence of climate change, which includes receding glaciers and warming temperature trends.” Perlman’s work both documents and resists the morphing terrains that compel her. Recent videos such as Dispersion (2015), Break (2014) and What Remains (2011), combine spectacular footage of moving ice and water with original soundtracks made in collaboration with a range of composers. As part of the ongoing Screenings series, the Humanities Center will debut Perlman’s most recent video project, Sweep (2024), for San Diego audiences.TrueSaints Tekakwitha and Serra Hall Humanities Center Gallery, 200Humanities Centerhumanitiescenter@sandiego.eduFaculty Colloquium: Camille Gear Rich (USC Gould School of Law)Camille Gear Rich
USC Gould School of Law
Dorothy W. Nelson Professor of Law and Sociology
Camille Gear Rich joined the USC Gould School of Law faculty in the fall of 2007 following five years of private practice. Her research and teaching interests include constitutional law, feminist legal theory, family law, children and the law and the First Amendment. She is the founder and director of PRYSM: The USC Initiative for the Study of Race, Gender, Sexuality and the Law. She is also the founding director of Gould’s First Generation Legal Professionals program. Rich is widely know for her research on law, discrimination and identity formation issues related to race, class, gender and sexuality. Rich was a visiting professor at Stanford Law School in Winter/Spring of 2017. She was a visiting professor at Yale Law School in Spring 2019. Professor Rich was a visiting online professor at the University of Virginia Law School in Spring 2021.
Prior to entering private practice, Rich clerked in the Southern District of New York for District Judge Robert L. Carter. She also clerked on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals for Circuit Judge Rosemary Barkett. She joined Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP in 2003, where she worked primarily on general commercial litigation and internal investigations. Rich also worked on various pro bono matters involving Title VII retaliation claims and disability rights. Her primary pro bono project was her work as co-counsel with the Legal Aid Society Prisoners Rights Project on a prisoners’ rights class action raising constitutional claims on behalf of all female prisoners in New York State prisons against New York State Department of Corrections officials. Plaintiffs challenged various prison staffing, supervision and training policies that created an unreasonable risk for female prisoners of sexual abuse by male corrections officers. Professor Rich was awarded the Legal Aid Society Pro Bono Award in recognition of her work on prisoners’ rights claims.
Rich has served as the Associate Provost of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Associate Provost for Student and Faculty Initiatives in the Social Sciences. She served in the Provost Office for 5 years. While serving as Associate Provost she founded Diversity and Inclusion Awareness Week, that grew into a 100 event diversity conference that provided diversity-related training sessions to the USC community. Additionally she was co-founder of Wicked Problems Practicuum, a cross-school program that invited graduate students from various programs to create think-tanks that partner with community and government agencies to collaborate on solving wicked problems affecting global mega-cities. She also launched the cross-school First Generation Professionals Program, which brings FGP students from across USC’s 19 schools together to share resources and experiences.
Rich graduated with honors from Brown University in 1993. She graduated from Yale Law School in 1998 and was a senior editor on the Yale Law Journal and the Yale Journal of Law and Feminism. She was awarded a postgraduate research fellowship at Yale Law School, during which she began her research on ways that antidiscrimination laws can better accommodate the shifting contingent nature of racial and ethnic identity. In 2020 & 2021 Professor Rich’s work was honored and included in an annual compendium of best articles on Women and the Law.

The 9th Annual USD School of Law – RJS LAW Tax Institute will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024. The Institute is the premier tax event in San Diego. The region's top tax attorneys, CPAs, and law/business school professors will discuss topics including government loan relief and abuses, challenges in cross-border transactions, and practical and realistic solutions in Trust, Estate Planning, and Tax matters.
The Richard Carpenter Excellence in Tax Award is given to an individual who exemplifies honesty, integrity, ethics, and compassion throughout his/her careers in the field of tax controversy and has demonstrated outstanding dedication and expertise while representing taxpayers before the federal and state governments.
Over the past 39 years, Richard Carpenter has been the leading IRS tax specialist in San Diego. He has devoted his entire legal career to defending hardworking taxpayers against the powerful reaches of the Internal Revenue Service. He began his career as a CPA when he worked for an international CPA firm in the Wall Street section of New York City. He then decided to attend law school where he received his Juris Doctor law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. Richard Carpenter has been an Adjunct Tax Law Professor at the University of San Diego School of Law for 31 years. He teaches both the Tax Court Litigation class as well as the Criminal Tax Fraud class. Richard has written 14 published tax law articles, some of which are the leading articles in the United States in resolving civil and criminal tax disputes. Over the past 31 years, Richard Carpenter has been dedicated to helping thousands of clients resolve their tax disputes with the IRS and the State of California, saving them millions of dollars. He can help you resolve your California or IRS tax problem too.
We continue to humbly request and encourage your support of USD School of Law’s Tax Law Student Scholarship Fund. As always, we are incredibly appreciative of your support.
