As Drug-Related Violence Rises in Mexico, Security Concern Also Rises

David Shirk recently received a call from the president of a hospital in El Paso, Texas. The news wasn’t good; in fact, it was another example of what’s really happening along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“In the last couple of months, he said they’ve had 27 cases of drug-related assaults that wind up on their doorstep because either these people are dropped off across the border or somehow they’ve made it across and go to facilities on the U.S. side because they’re trying to escape the violence in Cuidad Juarez,” said Shirk, director of the University of San Diego’s Trans-Border Institute (TBI).
