Volunteer Opportunities
USD University Ministry sponsors three community service learning projects for students in Guadalajara: the hospital for children with cancer, the women's convalescent center, and the orphanage. Students are encouraged to participate in these opportunities, to practice Spanish, to learn more about the Mexican culture, and to enrich their intellectual, spiritual and emotional development.
CASA: Center for Awareness, Service, and Action
CASA is a program within the Center for Community Service-Learning that engages over 3,000 undergraduate students annually in direct service or advocacy and awareness projects. Students in service promote the community and work for social change. The vision is global, recognizing that we can act in our immediate community, but that opportunities exist for international action as well.
School of Nursing
The University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing has been conducting international service-learning projects since 2003. Such activities have been and will continue to be framed within the context of direct patient care, conducting needs assessment research as well as intervention research to identify the efficacy of therapies and education provided. Since 2003, approximately 240 students and 23 faculty members from the School of Nursing have participated in programs located in the Tijuana border area, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Uganda. Through these efforts, approximately 4,300 people within these developing areas have been served.
