About COMPASS Services
By contacting our office, families can make an appointment with of our Program Coordinator to participate in a new process aimed at helping them better identify their needs as related to their child with special needs, and to discuss how they may benefit from the services we offer. Families in need will receive information, access to support services, appropriate community referrals and/or access to the following professional services under one roof.
- Education Advocacy is a service provided by upper division law students at the University of San Diego School of Law under the supervision of an attorney. Consultations are free and can assist parents in navigating the laws and regulations regarding special education. The clinic is part of the School of Law Legal Clinics. Upper division law students, under the supervision of an attorney, provide legal services that range from advice and consultation to formal mediation to due process hearings (if appropriate). The model incorporates the steps of Intake Appointment, Review of Education Records, Personalized Legal Consultation or Letter and Legal Services (if appropriate and resources permit).
- Family Counseling Services are provided by registered Marriage and Family Therapy Interns under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. These services are designed to address the needs of caregivers and siblings of children with special needs in short-term (6-8 sessions) format. Counseling sessions will focus on the following family issues: family and sibling adaptation, parental stress management, coping, family self-care, communications skills, isolation, and social support. These services have been created to meet the needs of the family through initial diagnosis as well as life stage transitions.
